This article probes the association between Lu Xun and pre-Qin culture, and yields two findings: one about the influence of pre-Qin culture on Lu Xun, the other being his conscious efforts in exploring and reviving the Culture. This research blazes a new trail in the study of Lu Xun, thus has but limited established reference. Methodologically, this article is either phenomenological, in that it undertakes to exhume sufficient facts evidencing the relation between Lu and pre-Qin culture, or interpretational, in that it goes beyond the surface and penetrates into the depth of the Relation with adequate comprehension and interpretation. What is unique of this research is that the pre-Qin culture is viewed as an integral part of Lu's literal thoughts, the ultimate theme of which is the modernistic revival of the Nation. Lu had explored pre-Qin culture with intention of recovering the dynamic source of literal creation in the antiquity and opening up a horizon for the National Revival. This article elaborates on pre-Qin legend, ideology, and literature that bore a lot on Lu. Lu felt in legend the impulse of the primitive dynamics of the Nation. His reflection on pre-Qin ideology amounts to a re-evaluation of the original concepts of the Nation. As to pre-Qin literature, he regarded it as the Nation's Cry Out Of Heart in the antiquity. In the final is the interpretation of Retold Stories as a sample typical of his conscious exploration: the metaphorical and fabulous restatement of pre-Qin culture, and the perfect illustration of the theme-Revival of the Nation.
