| Australia is a very special country in the Asian and the Pacific area. In its early history,it was a British colony. Geographically,it is in Oceania,which is adjacent to Asia. As far as its population is concerned,it is dominated by the white people,most of whom are descendents of the British,arid its economy,political system and cultural heritage all originated from Britain and America. Australia has always prided itself on belonging to the West,and estranged itself from Asia,with an apparent racial discrimination towards Asian countries.The outbreak of the Second World War marked the beginning of the change of the Australian view and policy towards Asia. Within the fifty years after the Second World War,the Australian view towards Asia has experienced such stages as understanding Asia,getting intimate with Asia,facing Asia and merging itself into Asia. During this time,its attitude towards Asia has changed first from being unconscious to being conscious,from taking a. passive choice to taking an active choice. This change was not without diver-sions. Since the 70's and the 80's,with the change of the international political and economic layout and the rapid development of the East Asian economy,Australia began its As5a-oriented policy. At,the same time,Australia has become more aware of its status in international affairs,turned its outlook from Europe and America to Asia,and become more and more involved in Asian affairs. It has even been announced that Australia's future depends on Asia. Since the beginning of the 90's when Australia began to "face Asia generally",Australia's relations with Asia have reached a new stage. This dissertation tries to make a dynamic analysis of Australia's relations with Asia. especially of the evolutional history of Australia's relations with Asia after the Second World War and of the causes of the evolution,so as to enhance a better understanding of the international relations in the Asian and the Pacific area,and of the tendency of the historical development of the world. The analysis,which is based on sufficient information,takes trends of historical development,the present layout and the progress of integration of the Asian and the Pacific area as its background.The dissertation,totaling to about 200 thousand Chinese characters,is composed of six chapters.Chapter One is the introduction. It;highlights the significance arid the aim of the research project. Information is also given concerning relevant research work done home and abroad,the approach of the analysis and the structure cf the dissertation.Chapter Two focuses on such three aspects as the ethnic culture,the regional politics arid the immigration issue,and explores in depth the origin and development of the relations between Australia and Asia. It is maintained that the British ethnic cultural features and Australia's geographical location between the East and the West constitute the basis for the Australian view towards Asia. This view had an overwhelming influence on Australia's relations with Asia from after the Second World War to the 90's. The immigration problem grew with the development of Australia's relations with Asia,and has become one of the most important factors that influence the Australian policy towards Asia.In Chapter Three,it is discussed that Australia's approach towards Asiaoriginated from its efforts 1,0 get rid of its dependence on Britain ever since the 1930's,and the 1940's,when Australia began to send diplomatic delegations to such countries in the Asian and the Pacific area as the US,Japan,and China. The Second World War marked the beginning of a new stage in the history of Australia's relations with Asia,'line War mercilessly sent Australia onto the battlefields in Asia arid on the Pacific,and Australia's destiny was chained to that of the- anti -Fascist Asian countries.
