Lu Simian (1884-1957), whose ZI is Cheng Zhi, is accepted as one of the Four Great Historians of Modern History, along with Chen Yinque, Chen Yuan, Qian Mu. L u's academic interests ranged very wide, from research works about general history, dynastic history, specialized history, to introductory literatures such as textbooks. At the same time, he also paid much attention to the welfares of the whole nation, and published many papers on many social problems in his time. Throughout his life Lu had accomplished works amounting to12,000,000words, which contributed greatly to the establishment and development of Chinese history studies of modern time. This dissertation, whose title is "Lu Simian and the New Historiography in the first half of20th century", on the one hand, plans to shed light on the characteristics of Lu's historical accomplishment from these perspectives, namely, influences of others, methodology, historical theory and writing styles; on the other hand, devotes to analyze Lu's works in the social and academic context of the first half of20th century, through comparison, generalization and deep exploration, ultimately to evaluate Lu's academic status in the intellectual history of20th century.Chapter1"Lu's early life", discusses Lu's education background, social environment in his time, and personal character, indicating the intimate relationship between Lu's academic inclination and his experience. Chapter2and Chapter3analyze Lu's history methodology and historical theory respectively, outline his specific ideas and techniques in the aspects of historical methodology and "Statecraft Thought", and conclude that:Lu, as "New Historian" in the20th century, whose contribution in history is so considerable, benefited a lot from not only his initiative acceptance of ideas and methods of western history, but also his inheritance and development of the traditional Chinese history studies. Chapter4and Chapter5concentrate on the historical works edited by Lu. Chapter4,"Lu and the editing of the general history of China", comparing with other works about general history in the first half of20th century, characterizes Lu's historical theory and method, and measure the unique style and value of his works. Chapter5"Lii and'Gu Shi Bian'", studies the editing of "Gu Shi Bian" in which Lu participated, and makes contrasts between Lu and Gu Jiegang and others in different inclinations of historical history. Chapter6"Lu's research course and contribution on the New Historiography", firstly, generalizes Lu's relationship with "the New Historiography movement" through these aspects such as research course, historical interests, academic status; secondly, by studying of his academic experience, outlines Lii's general principle and intellectual inclination of history studies, lastly, interprets his claiming "Denouncement of Fame and Wealth" in divergent levels of meaning, and evaluates his academic status.
