A European Commission Regulation (EC No. 1525/98) on aflatoxins came into force on 1 January 1999. It offers even more consumer protection against aflatoxins than was provided by previous U.K. laws. The new regulation sets limits for aflatoxin B1 and total aflatoxins in groundnuts, nuts, dried fruit, cereals and a limit for aflatoxin M1 in milk. Higher limits are provided for groundnuts, nuts and dried fruit intended for further processing before human consumption.
