Objective: Event-related potentials (ERP) and event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (ER-fMRI) were employed to investigate the spatio-temporal aspects of processes underlying identity- and conflict-identification tasks during working memory, and to explore the mechanism of cognitive impairment related to the episodic nocturnal hypoxemia in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.Experiment 1. To observe the ERP effects associated with stimulus displayed patterns. Methods: The simultaneously displayed task (SDT) and delayed matching to sample task (DMS) were conducted in the study. Subjects were instructed to discriminate if the stimulus pairs were identical to or different from other one in each stimulus-displayed task. Result: a negative component N270 with whole scalp distribution was elicited, as the stimulus pairs were different, while a positive component N2b-P300 was evoked when the stimuli were identical, in the DMS paradigm. In contrast, a N2 component was elicited in both the stimuli identical and conflict in SDT paradigm, which predominantly distributed at central electrode position. These observations indicate that the different cognition processes are involved in the discrimination tasks in relation to the stimulus displayed patterns. N2 component might reflect the monitoring process in the SDT pattern. N270 and N2b-P300 components were elicited in association with conflict identification and identity identification processing respectively.Experiment 2. Go / No-go stimulus paradigm were performed to investigate the effect of behavioral inhibition task No-go on the conflict identification component N270. Methods: Subjects were required to make a judgment whether the second stimulus was identical to or different from the first one in both their feature and color (Go task), and to suppress the response when either their...
