Expression of several bio-markers in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity: clinic pathological and prognostic significancePurpose: To find useful marker for predicting metastasis, overall survivalin patients with T1/T2 oral squamous cell carcinoma.Experimental Design: Clinical and molecular analyses were conducted on 95patients with T1/T2 oral squamous cell carcinoma, retrospectively. Clinicalprognostic factors included age, T stage, tumor thickness, pattern ofinvasion, grade, muscle invasion, surgical margin, lymphoid infiltration, local recurrence and N stage. Molecular prognostic factors included COX-2,Ki-67, EGFR, VEGF-C, Cyclin D1, P16, Bax, Bcl-2, CD44v6 and MMP-9 expressionlevels were determined by immunohistochemistry on paraffin-embedded tissuesarrayed on tissue microarrays. Results: Independent correlates of neck metastasis included tumor thickness,COX-2, CD44v6, MMP-9, VEGF-C, Cyclin Dl. During survival analysis, tumorthickness, local recurrence, COX-2, P16, Bel—2, neck metastasis, EGFR andT stage were correlated with survival rate. Conclusions: Tumor thickness, expression of COX-2, CD44v6, MMP-9, VEGF-C,Cyclin Dl predicts for neck metastasis in T1/T2 oral squamous cell carcinoma.Tumor thickness, local recurrence, COX-2, P16, Bcl-2, neck metastasis, EGFRand T stage are important predictors of overall survival.
