The classic book named Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases (Shang Han Za Bing Lun) was honored as "the ancestor of Chinese medicine prescription". There are hundreds of famous and classical prescriptions in this book. The prescriptions in the book have the characteristics of high effectiveness with a few Chinese medicinal materials. However, due to the changes of measurement scales in different dynasties in Chinese history, there have been uncertainties in the measurement scales used in the recorded prescriptions in the book. The uncertainties have confusing Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners for years. Song dynasty was not only a renaissance in Chinese history, but also a prosperous developing time for TCM. It was another important period in time in which TCM had been developed dramatically after Tang dynasty. All kinds of powrders for TCM were created and used by TCM practitioners in this crucial period. Powder is a form of TCM clinical practice, which played an important role for the dosage evolution for the whole TCM. Therefore, we select the most representative classical books in Song dynasty to analyze the dosage changes through the famous practitioner's prescriptions recorded in the books. The aim of this research is explore the dosage changes and to discover the potential patterns in these TCM doctors'clinical practice in terms of dosage changing.Research subject:To select50different kinds of Chinese medicinal materials from the book Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases (Shang Han Za Bing Lun),such as Baizhu, Banxia, Shaoyao and so on. These Chinese medicinal materials are mainly used at all times. Building a database including these50Chinese medicinal materials information about their dosage changing used by related famous TCM doctors in Song dynasty,we analyzed each item in details to explore the regular pattern and find out potential traits in these TCM doctors' clinical practice on the dosage changing. Eight classic books was selected in this research including Pu Ji Ben Shi Fang written by Xu Shuwei, San Yin Ji-Bing Zheng Fang Lun written by Chen Wuze, Fu Ren Da Quan Liang Fang written by Chen Ziming, Wai Ke Jing Yao, Shang Han Zong Bing Lun written by Pang Anshi, Chong Ji Yan Shi Ji Sheng Fang written by Yan Yonghe, Ren Zhai Zhi Zhi Fang Lun written by Yang Shi Ying, and Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang published by the Song government.Research aim:1.To establish database about TCM doctors'clinical prescriptions to describe their dosage changing in clinical practice in Song dynasty, referring to the average dose, the common dose, dose distribution and the dose range and so on.2. To explore the regular pattern and find out potential traits in these TCM doctors'clinical practice on the dosage changing by means of data mining and statistic methods.3.To trace the normal dosage changing pattern from the book Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases (Shang Han Za Bing Lun) in Song dynasty to compare the difference between the book and the Song TCM doctors.Research method:1. All information has been collected by excel form from the most used50Chinese medicinal materials in the book Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases (Shang Han Za Bing Lun). Meanwhile, the information about each Chinese medicinal material dosage from those selected books from Song dynasty was also typed into the excel form.2.As rich information could misguide researchers we just focused on the dosage of decoction and powder, not on other forms of these50Chinese medicinal materials.3.Data analyzing:basic statistical analysis have been conducted in the software SPSS17.0to calculate the frequency, common dosage, average dosage, dosage distribution and dosage range.4. Analyzing results were shown about the whole range for the50Chinese medicinal materials of TCM doctors in Song dynasty. Then in comparison between TCM doctors and Zhong Zhongjing who were the author of the Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases (Shang Han Za Bing Lun) was done, plus comparing with the modern national pharmacopoeiaResearch results:There were2622prescriptions were included from the selected books in Song dynasty, which were divided into337decoction prescriptions and2286powder prescriptions. All the information analyzing was based on these prescriptions:①frequency calculating:50most used Chinese medicinal materials from Shang Han Za Bing Lun were ranked from high to low by their frequency in all included2622prescriptions. There were13Chinese medicinal materials were used more than33times (≥10%) in337decoction prescriptions of these selected Song dynasty books. And there were11Chinese medicinal materials were used more than232times (≥10%) in2286powder prescriptions of these selected Song dynasty books.②average dosage:among337decoction prescriptions, the average dosage of the50most used Chinese medicinal materials was from6.67to71.74grams, in which30Chinese medicinal materials (30/50,60%) has the most common use dosage with16to28grams. Among2286powder prescriptions, the average dosage of the50most used Chinese medicinal materials was from1.23to15.12grams, in which28Chinese medicinal materials (28/50,56%) has the most common use dosage with2to4grams.③the most common dosage:In337decoction prescriptions,10Chinese medicinal materials of the50most used Chinese medicinal materials with high frequency distribution had the most common dosage of10grams. In2286powder prescriptions,10Chinese medicinal materials of the50most used Chinese medicinal materials with high frequency distribution had the most common dosage of1.6grams. So, the most common dosage in decoction prescriptions are about ten times than the dosage in powder prescriptions.④dosage distribution range:in decoction prescriptions Dahuang got the largest distribution range, and then Zhizi and in powder prescriptions Maidong got the largest distribution range.⑤the most common dosage range:In337decoction prescriptions, most of the50most used Chinese medicinal materials was within10grams according to the lower limit of the range and within40grams according to the higher limit of the range. In2286powder prescriptions, most of the50most used Chinese medicinal materials was within4grams according to the lower limit of the range and within6grams according to the higher limit of the range.⑥The dosage of the50most used Chinese medicinal materials was almost the same with the dosage in decoction prescriptions for the Song TCM doctors, but much more than the dosage in powder prescriptions.⑦Song TCM doctors used much closer dosage in powder prescription to the dosage in the modern national pharmacopoeia compared with the dosage in the book Shang Han Za Bing Lun.⑧The number of Chinese medicinal materials used in clinical practice in Song dynasty was a slight increase in the book Shang Han Za Bing LunDiscussion:This thesis discussed the reasons that powder prescription was prosperous in Song dynasty. Some related points were also discussed from different perspectives, for instance the Dao history and military usage.
