[Objective] To observe the clinical effects of treating chronic insomnia with the combination of routine needling and Craniosacral Therapy.[Methods] Ninety cases of insomnia were randomly divided into 3 groups,30 in pure needling group (Group A),30 in pure craniosacral treatment group (Group B) and 30 in the comprehensive treatment group (Group C), were treated by routine needling, craniosacral treatment and the combination of the two therapies respectively. Treatments were administered once two days for 4 weeks. Observations including the clinical effectiveness, the assessment scores of Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and the untoward side effects. All the data were processed by SPSS 17.0 soft ware for windows.[Results] There was not any difference of the curative effect among the needling treatment group, craniosacral treatment group and the combination treatment group at the end of forth weekend (P>0.05).The scores of PSQI decreased obviously in all three groups after treatment (P<0.01). Except the time of falling in sleeping had not any change, the other indexes, including the sleeping quality, sleeping time, time of falling to sleeping, sleeping effective, sleeping disorders, sleeping pills and day function, decreased significantly in each group (P<0.01-0.05), but there was not any obvious difference among three groups. The comparison of the sub-factors of PSQI among the three groups showed no statistics meaning (P>0.05). But needling was the best in improving the sleeping time (P<0.01), while craniosacral treatment the better (P<0.01). The combination method was the best in improving the sleeping pills (P<0.01). And needling was the best in improving day time function (P<0.01)[Conclusion] Pure needling, pure craniosacral treatment and their combination could treat chronic insomnia effectively. The comparison showed that pure needling was best in improving the sleeping time and the day time function of the patients, pure craniosacral treatment was better in improving the sleeping time, and the combination method specially in improving the application of the sleeping pills of the patients.
