At present, it lacks systematic research methods and uniform evaluation criteria in the domestic research of band selection of the detection system, so that it is difficult to give the best detection band. To solve this problem, the paper uses method of system simulation and takes detection probability and false alarm rate as the band selection evaluation criteria, which solves the issue of optimal band selection of point target detection in the specific background, and proposes a method to optimal band selection taking different targets into account.The research of band selection of the system is to enable optimal detection performance of the system in the band selected, which is related with the spectral characteristics of the target and the background radiance as well as other relevant parameters of the instrument. Therefore, the whole system of point target detection was modeled and simulated in this paper including mathematical models of atmospheric background radiation and background clutter as well as the detection system. In connection with the fact that background clutter transferred trough the system(optical and detector array modules)would be subject to the non-uniformity of the system, the background clutter was modified with the affect of system response, which is more in line with the actual situation. This part of the research provides important input sources and theoretical support for the detection performance computing.To the question of band selection evaluation criteria, the paper established a band selection performance evaluation model which took the single-frame detection probability and false alarm rate of the system as an evaluation index, and the requirements of the detection probability and false alarm rate were converted equivalent to the SIR(signal interference ratio) of the indicator. The application of the SIR into band selection can effectively combine SCR and SNR and is conductive to noise classification discussion.The optimal detection bands of different targets were selected based on the system performance evaluation model related with the band selection. For the optimal band differs with different target, the paper proposes a method of optimal band selection considering different targets which take the mean normalized SIR of various targets in the band alternative set as the criteria of band selection. The method was applied in three different targets put forward in the paper, and eventually the optimal band under cirrus weather was selected which were 2.73~3.13 um in the SWIR and 4.188~4.488 um in the MWIR.For the system detection performance for specific target may be affected by the instrument parameters, this paper put forward the requirements of system resolution and stray light of the system from the perspective of the system.The research of this paper is of guidance significance for the actual engineering design and the band selected is expected to be employed in the actual detection system. However, as the research method in this paper is still in theoretical research areas and there is still a big distance between the theoretical research and engineering project, a lot of experiments are necessary to verify the result of this paper.
