Detection targets of the shipboard infrared search and track system include low altitude airplane and the sea-skimming missile, the imaging of target is above or near the sea-sky line. The background of imaging is composed by the sea background and the sky background. Because the background is complexity and the imaging distance is far, the target only occupies several pixels and is submerged by the background clutter, the signal to noise ratio is very low, so the target recognition is very difficult. Therefore, studies on the technology of target detection with the sea-sky complex background and low SNR will enhance the performance of weak point targets recognition under complicated background and improve the operating distance of the system is of great significance. At first, the technology of image pretreatment is introduced, the simulation and the analysis about several algorithms are made, it is advantageous to the following target detection. Secondly, the technology of the sea-sky background segmentation is studied, on the basis of the existed algorithms, using the great difference between the sea background and the sky background under the sea-sky background and the gray of the target has the different characteristic, a new target detection algorithm based on the gray characteristic of infrared image is presented. This method does not need too many target contents and hypothesis, focusing on the gray difference of the background to segment it. Because the long-distance target is always near the sea-sky line, the real target can be segmented and detected. The experimental results show that the improvement method is effective and feasible.
