Postmenopausal osteoporosis is associated with reduction or termination of ovarian functions. Loss of bone mass due to the insufficiency of E2 could result in weakening of the skeletal microarchetecture and increase the susceptibility to the fracture of bone, long term disability, and risk of death. A great deal of experimental, clinic and epidemic research data have demonstrated that estrogens was effective in the prevention and treatment of postmenopausal progressive bone loss, and could reduce the fractures of bone. Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) is one of the most important and efficacious ways in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, and might alleviate postmenopausal symptoms caused by the feedback disorder in hypothalamus—pituitary—ovary axis. Phytogens, which show estrogen-like effects, can bind to the estrogen receptors (ER), induce specific estrogen-responsive gene products, and are of beneficial effects in improving postmenopausal adverse symptoms, osteoporosis, tumor and cardiovascular diseases. Chinese traditional herbs have been used as medicines for thousands of years, among which include a lot of compounds such as isoflavones and coumarine, being an abundant source of phytogens. In present study, premature female rats were used to confirm the estrogen-like effects of some kinds of herbs. Then the aged ovariectomized rats were selected to observe the preventive and therapeutic effects of Psoralea Corylifolia extract on experimental osteoporosis. Finally, the human osteoblast-like sarcoma line—HOS TE85 cell was chosen to investigate the mechanisms of the Psoralea Corylifolia extract in the proliferation of cells, the synthesis of type I collagen and total content of calcium in cells, etc.1. Screening the ten estrogen-like herbsIt is said that Flos carthami, Herba Lophatheri, Semen Impatientis, Cridium monnieri (li) Cusson, Semen Cassiae, Fructus Rubi Immatures, Psoralea Corylifolia, Flos Albizziae, Radix Angelicae Sinensis and Semen...
