The bio-active fraction was extracted and isolated from the traditional Chinese medicine Fructus Xanthii (CangEr'Zi) and named total phenolic acids (TPA). Two novel with 14 known compounds were isolated from the active fraction, as well as 17 known compounds from other fractions. TPA and some pure compounds were proved to have antiinflamatory, analgesic and anti-allergic activities. TPA also showed curing effects in experimental allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. The interspecific difference and the intraspecific variation of Xanthium plants in China were studied by quantitative taxonomy method. A special type of Xanthium collected from Shenzhen was found very difference from others and named Shenzhen type. Studies on chemical fingerprint of Fructus Xanthii were performed by HPLC-UV-DAD method and the collected samples were divided into 3 types, mono-caffeoyl type, di-caffeoyl type and Shenzhen type. The quatitative determination methods were established with five active components as standards. The phenolic acid contents of the crude drugs collected from different sites of China were determined by these methods for quality-evaluation and more reasonable application of Xanthium.
