Part OneChanges of Brainstem Auditory Potential and Neurotransmitters in Ventilated Neonatal PigletsObjective To study changes of brainstem auditory potentials and neurotransimitters in ventilated neonatal piglets during 48 hours ventilation. Methods Eighteen neonatal piglets, aged 5-7days old,.were randomaly assigned to one of the following groups: Control group (n=6), Normal volume ventilation group (n=6), High volume ventilation group(n=6). BAEP were obtained at baseline and then twelve hours until the piglets were killed. We observed the glutamate and y-GABA A receptors levels in auditory nucleus. Results Compared to control group, of high volume ventilation group wave â…¢ amplitude were significantly reduced at 91/s click rate, wave â…¤ latencies were significantly increased at 21/s click rate at 48 hours. Glutamate levels were reduced in ventilated piglets, particularly of high volume ventilation group(p<0.05), While y-GABA A receptors levels were significantly increased of high volume ventilation group. Conclusions Mechanical ventilation could increase wave â…¤ latencies. High volume ventilation could reduce amplitudes of wave â…¢ simutaneously. Elevated levels of y-GABA receptors may be involved in brain damage.Part TwoChanges of Brainstem Auditory Potential, Cerebral Blood Flow and Serum NSE in Piglets with Lung InjuryObjective To study changes of BAEP, regional CBF and serum NSE in ventilated neonatal piglets after lung injury. Methods twenty-four neonatal piglets were assigned randomaly to one of following groups: Control group(n=6), Lung injury group(n=6), Lung injury with normal volume ventilation group(n=6), Lung injury with high volume ventilation group(n=6). Piglets received an intratracheal bolus of 3ml/kg of mixture of human meconium...
