| We acknowledge that it is necessary to make a systematic and comprehensive literature study on Treatment based on the Combination of Disease and Syndrome (TCDS) in order to reveal the rule of the formation and development of its mode, and to provide reference and inspiration for its further development for promoting the production of better curative effects of clinical practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), as well as for pushing forward the development of clinical science of TCM.This study indicates that the idea of TCDS first germinated in Huangdi's Canon of Medicine, then was carried forward by.Zhang Zhongjing of Eastern Han Dynasty, who initiated the mode of treatment based on the trinity of disease, syndrome and symptoms. During the period of Song, Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, Treatment based on Syndrome Differentiation (TSD) was developed by deeps and bounds, and became the core of diagnosis and treatment of disease, thus the mode of TCDS with TSD as its core formed. In modern times, the gradual dissemination of western medicine in China not only challenged the position of Treatment based on Disease Differentiation (TDD), but enlightened thethought of disease differentiation. Doctors of the school of Integration of Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine (ITCWM) creatively put forward the mode of TCDS which loyally supported TCM with western medicine as a reference. With the development of modern medical technology and intercourse and cooperation of TCM with western medicine, the mode of TCDS with ITCWM features slowly takes shape in clinical practice of TCM, which absorbs the idea and theory of disease differentiation in western medicine and combines it with TSD in TCM, thereby has each own strong points. But satisfaction with the mode of thinking that diagnosing diseases in western medicine is combined with treating syndromes in TCM may hinder the improvement of disease differentiation in TCM; while over-emphasis on treatment based on disease differentiation and the tendency towards stubborn pursuit of distinctive treatment of specific herbs for a particular disease will lead to retrogression of TSD. Therefore, the author attempts to combine the advantages in modern ITCWM with merits of Zhang Zhongj ing's organic fusion of disease, syndrome and symptoms, works out "the mode of treatment based on the trinity of disease, syndrome and symptoms with ITCWM features"... |
