Background:Depression and schizophrenia are commonly seen in clinical, whose symptoms are mainly in mental. Without TCM’s syndrome differentiation of viscera, it is difficult to treat mental diseases by TCM. That’s the reason why it attracts so many attentions. It is worth warning that most mental diseases are accompanied by some body symptoms whose relationship with five internal organs is relatively easy to achieve. Therefore, this research aims to find the connection between depression, schizophrenia and internal organs. Wen Dan Tang (Decoction for Clearing Away Gallbladder Heat) is a typical formula for regulating spleen and stomach, usually used for treating various mental diseases clinically. Thus, through evaluation of Wen Dan Tang’s treating effects in depression and schizophrenia. This research tries to analyze the relation between spleen, stomach and the mind. Objective:By comprehensively analyzing the connection between the mind and internal organs, this research aims to show the five internal organs’regulation function on mind, as well as the relation of spleen-stomach and the mind.Method:1. From the aspect of the ancient cases, to find the connection between body symptoms and five internal organs, this research collected three typical medical cases and then studied the body symptoms of mental diseases in these three cases. SPSS20.0 statistical software was used to describe the condition of body symptoms and their distribution in the five internal organs. Meanwhile, Chi-squared test was used to describe their percentage.2. By clinical investigation, patients in line with depression and schizophrenia standard were collected as the research objects in order to link the body symptoms and five organs together. SPSS20.0 statistical software was used to describe the condition of body symptoms and their distribution in the five internal organs. Meanwhile, Chi-squared test was used to describe their percentage.3. According to the Bia-risk Assessment in Cochrane handbook, evidence-based medicine was used to systematically assess the clinical effect of Wen Dan Tang ’treatment on depression and schizophrenia.Results:1. After the frequency statistic of mental diseases’ symptoms in ancient medical cases, it is found that the order of occurrence percentage is spleen, heart, liver, lung and kidney. Among them, the chi-square test show that the spleen system and the heart system have no statistically significant, P=0.604> 0.005. When the two systems are compared with other systems, the P values are all below 0.005, which shows a remarkable difference and suggests the symptoms of mental diseases are all can be seen in five internal organs, especially the heart and spleen system.2. After the clinical investigation of depression and schizophrenia, it is found that the order of occurrence percentage of five organs’ symptoms in depression is spleen, heart, liver, kidney and lung. Among them, the chi-square test show that the spleen system and the heart system have no statistically significant, P=0.0.597>0.005, When the two systems are compared with other systems, the P values are all below 0.005. Meanwhile, the order of occurrence percentage of five organs’ symptoms in schizophrenia is heart, spleen, liver, kidney and lung. Among them, the chi-square test show that the spleen system and the heart system have no statistically significant, P=0.429> 0.005. When the two systems are compared with other systems, the P values are all below 0.005, which suggests the depression and schizophrenia are both related to five organs, especially the heart and spleen systems.3. The response assessments of depression and schizophrenia by Wen Dan Tang as follows: by using Wen Dan Tang alone or using Wen Dan Tang combined with antidepressant, the effect is better than using antidepressant alone. And using Wen Dan Tang combined with antipsychotics’ effect is better than using antipsychotics alone.Conclusion:1. The first two studies showed that mental disorders, depression and schizophrenia have relationships with internal organs, especially the heart and spleen system. Depression and schizophrenia are typical mental diseases; therefore, we can safely draw the conclusion that the mental diseases are closely related to internal organs, in particular the heart and spleen.2. Wen Dan Tang is a typical formula for spleen and stomach regulation. This research shows its curative power on treating depression and schizophrenia.Theoretical Discussion:This thesis elaborates four points based on what I have analyzed above. They are views of internal organs storing vitality, internal organs governing the mind; heart governing the mind and the connection between spleen, stomach and mind.
