Variable Vector Propeller (VVP) is a new type thruster, which can be used to provide forces on any direction by control pitch angle periodically. By using this type of propeller, it certainly seems to be able to reduce propellers and consequently to contribute to the compactness and the light weight of ROV, etc. It will be applied widely in ocean engineering area.The mathematical model for predicting hydrodynamic characteristics of Variable Vector Propeller under steady or unsteady condition are present based on the Panel method theory. Then, method for numeric calculation is provided and the performance of VVP under steady or unsteady condition is researched and makes comparisons among the experimental data by Japan,the results of the evaluation based on lifting-line theory,the evaluation based on lifting-surface theory and the results with the presented method in this paper, which show satisfactory agreement between the first and the last.Analyze the influence of main parameters including exp. area ratio,blade number,collective pitch angle,section shape,cyclic pitch angle and rake angle on the performance of VVP. Presents the research on the performance of VVP with different hub and with different assumption of wake model.The cycloid principle is applied to design the pitch control device for WP ,on the base of which a new type pitch control device using eccentric mechanism is devised. At the same time, a pitch control device using disk mechanism and link mechanism is devised.The devices designed in the paper are prepared for the succedent model test.
