The Greater Shanghai Plan is the first and famous urban planning project of Chinese downtown made by Chinese people in early modern China which changed the urban structure of Shanghai and left the urban heritage to the Yangpu District, now one of the side downtowns of Shanghai with Jiangwan area in its center. The dissertation is not only restricted in description of the urban planning project in the Shanghai Plan, but also puts the change and development of it in the context of the history, and analyses its approaches of the implementation which changed the urban space. The process of modern Shanghai's evolution indicated that urban planning would rather be the responses to the political, economical and social reality than in common sense the scientific theory or the technological method. The big projects are some typical cases which, successful or failing, should be the experiences and lessons for the future development of Shanghai.The dissertation is composed of six parts. The introduction expounds the background, problems and the methods of the research. The first chapter reveals the course of the Greater Shanghai Plan. The second chapter analyses the aim, the main content and the characters of the Greater Shanghai Plan including the architecture design. The third chapter reveals the implementation of the Greater Shanghai Plan that changed the urban space. The fourth chapter discuss after the Greater Shanghai Plan, the interaction between the urban planning project and the urban space. The epilogue has a brief discussion the experience of the Greater Shanghai Plan, the heritage of urban space and the big projects on contemporary life, and expects the development of the past Chinese downtown in the future.
