| In Beijing, since the 1990's, vehicle quantity has been increasing quickly, and traffic demand has been growing in high speed correspondingly. However, resources, energy and funds are limited, thus the future of transportation system is gloomy in some extent. The 29th Olympic Games will be held in Beijing in 2008, the Games will attract millions of participants, and it will certainly be a great challenge for transportation system. Therefore, it's urgent to plan and develop Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in Beijing, so that the efficiency of transportation systems can be improved by science and technology, and participants of the Games can enjoy top-quality service.The paper studies three aspects of contents that supplement each other, including Olympic transport, traffic operations planning and management for Planned Special Events (PSE), and plan of the Olympic ITS. In the research, Olympic transport is base of the total, traffic operations planning and management for PSE is the extension research, and plan of the Olympic ITS is the focus and emphasis.On the base of analyzing statistic data of former Olympic Games, experiences and lessons for ITS development, transportation planning and organization are studied. The 11th Asia Olympic Games, the 9th and the 10th National Olympic Games are also studied, so that experiences and lessons of PSE in China are summarized.Methodology of traffic demand forecast is the key aspect of Olympic transport study. First, the paper studies the method to forecast the total traffic demand of Beijing during the period of Olympic Games. Second, for the Olympic passenger transport, analyzes the kind, quantity, and trip style of participants, and forecast methods are studied in detail in two ways, traffic generation and traffic attraction. Third, the quantity and characteristic of Olympic freight are studied. Based on statistic data and forecast results, the Olympic transport characteristic including quantity of traffic demand, service level and passenger distribution are studied. Considering characteristic of Olympic transport and Beijing transportation system, the corresponding count measures are studied.Planned Special Events is not only an opportunity, but a great challenge for the undertake city.
