It has been a rough journey for the modern architecture education in China since the 1920s but it has never given up the exploration for improvement.The current market of real estate in China is in a rapid changing phase with evolving technology, massive on-going constructions and all kinds of design styles and ideas.And this puts high and urgent requirements on high quality and improved technology for architecture design. It is both an opportunity and challenge for designers under such circumstance.Since the architecture education is so closely related to national economy and everyday life, it is the responsibility of the education system to make sure that highly educated designers can be qualified to keep pace with the time instead of staying behind.The ultimate purpose of the modern architecture education is to train the designer and builder of the society for right now and the future.They need to understand the problems, master the latest technology, and have the capability to apply their professional knowledge to real problems so as to create a highly developed spiritual and material environment.There is a proverb in ancient China: " To award people with fish is not so good as teaching people how to fish ",These words interpret the objective of modern Architecture education system in China.The output of architecture education programs is designers with abilities to learn new things, solve problems and coordinate various issues under complex circumstances. The best note for modern architecture education is to always keep up with the development of the society.How to implement the ideas of modern architecture education? One of the main issues of the study is the teaching model for architectural curriculums.Teaching methods and approaches express the idea of how to educate students and they are the key and base to design architectural curriculums and programs. A brand-new teaching model will be constructed in the study, which can make student fully involved in the design activity while keep the guidance from instructors. On this basis, it will be used to actualize the overall improvement of teaching mode, course content, teaching means and methods.Following are the characteristics of the teaching model constructed in the study:The tasks of the instructor is to coordinate the education process, construct the architectural curriculum and promote working ethics;and those for students are to collect, store and process information on Architecture, experience the design process, and have first-hand knowledge on design and construction.The important functions of the teaching media are to assist the demonstration and interpretation of the instructors, to help students to study design theories and implementation process spontaneously. The content of the courses includes not only the books but also enormous amounts of information on design knowledge and experience from other teaching media that can be approached by students through either self-study or teacher's assistant.Another issue that is covered by the paper is how to technically implement the teaching modal.The renovation of teaching methodology is inevitable for the architectural education system in China. It is a natural and self-regenerating way for the educational institutes to take active moves on renovating teaching methodologies.In recent years, the most obvious change for the technology applied in the architectural education is the introduction of digital technology to the design and interpretation of architecture.As an intersection of Technology and Art, Design is a subject that strongly requires dynamic interpretation and interactivities in the teaching and learning process. For the first time this need is satisfied by the application of multimedia technology and remote technology.The application of network and multimedia technology breaks the traditions of architectural education, goes beyond time and space and opens the variouspossibilities for architectural education. It will result in more application of the technology in teaching and tremendous change of the pattern for architectural education in the near future. The multimedia and remote teaching methodologies are the definite future of the architectural education in this era with knowledge-drive economy.An education courseware creating system for remote multimedia architecture education is successfully developed in the study. It deleted some weak points of traditional courseware tools. Compared with traditional courseware technology, it excels in following metrics:1) A flexible database is built within the system. The courseware created by this multimedia and remote education system can read from the database and take information out of the database at any time. The database can be updated or edited by the user (instructor) side at any time.2) A framework to build multimedia courseware is constructed in the system, which helps instructors to customize their own courseware in a fast and convenient fashion without spending much time on learning complicated multimedia editing tools.3) The system can be used to build flexible knowledge structure and complicated information trees, which matches the practical architectural knowledge system and excels the traditional one-way flowing process of previous education courseware.4) A search engine is provided by the system and it offers functions of expanding and regenerating for the courseware.The system has access to WEB service. The availability of WEB service provides great advantage to connect information from huge amount of resources for building courseware of multimedia and remote education.5) A set of evaluation methods for the quality of the multimedia and remote education system is structured based on the characteristics of multimedia and remote education and the reality set in China.
