Since the beginning of modern times, the political, economic, and cultural have undergone earth-shaking changes in Wuhan, because of the Westernization Movement led by Zhang Zhidong and the influx of western forces since Wuhan opened.The education reform that Zhang Zhidong laughched in Wuhan and the western church school's rapid development, impacted the traditional education system greatly and make the education system and architechture modernization.As a meaningful type of architecture, the modern educational architecture of Wuhan stands for conflicts and fusions between Chinese and Western culture, and witnesses the development of modern multi educational culture in Wuhan as well, which is an irreproducible and invaluable culture resource. This article analyzes their developing background and procedure thoroughly and make an in-depth study of Wuhan's modern education buildings from the perspective of architectural design.There are two tracks for the modern educational architecture in Wuhan. One is the Wuhan native self-built architecture. The developing course is to inherit the traditional architecture style and improve it at first, then growing to take in and accept the advanced western educational architectural styles. The other track is that the western churches, entering Wuhan from the coastline area, built schools and brought new architectural styles. The development of the religious school buildings is to absorb the native architectural signs, elements and try to combine with the native style.This article begins with the two historical tracks, and analyze their school planning, architecture features. There are five parts of the article:Part I describes the background, significance, object, purpose and methods of the study, as well as the current study status of Wuhan modern buildings and modern education buildings.Through the collation of literature information, part II analyzes the Wuhan education building development background, sums up the development and the type of the native education buildings and the western church schools respectively.On the basis of the site visits and mapping information, part III and part IV make an analysis to the planning, graphic functions, architectural modeling and techniques of the local education buildings and church schools.Part V summarizes the comprehensive features and achievements of Wuhan modern education buildings, and make an analysis to its inspiration in today'sarchitectural design.
