From a historical viewpoint of urban development, sudden change and certain types of irrational phenomena happen during rapid urbanization due to the impact of social dominant interests and choices which appear to be artificial. Therefore, the evolution of urban spaces requires the exercise of the most appropriate choices of directions. Based on theses fact and, with an eye towards future development, the author takes Zhejiang coastal area as an example and analyzes the motive and discipline of its rapid development, in order to demonstrate how an integrated, sustainable, and dynamic method of urban planning, may be applied. One which considers all kinds of urban elements and constructs a balance of urban spaces, and thus advocates a rational method of city planning in order to solve the problems of urban development during the current period, and in the future.Based on the background of rapid urban modernization, this article takes urban space expansion, new town construction and village-in-city as typical examples and explores three aspects of planning: including urban energy release, urban space organization and urban evolution. It consists of an introduction, three discussion parts and a conclusion.Introduction: Introduces the background of the topic, clarifies the reason for writing this article and sets forth the main content and framework of the article by reviewing previous studies.Part I: Reality and Problem, one chapter. Based on a deep understanding of the content and development phases of urbanization, the author reviews the history and characteristics of urbanization in Zhejiang, indicates the major problems of urban evolution during the current rapid urbanization, such as the 'disorder' of urban expansion, 'lost' of new towns construction and 'isolation' of the village-in-city and interprets the relationship among these problems.Part II: Thinking and Exploration, including three chapters. Each chapter takes Hangzhou, Ningbo and Taizhou, respectively, as the study object, exploring the depth, and widely exploring and completely analyzing the problems of urban development of Zhejiang coastal area. Inspired by sustainable design strategies and human habitation system, directed by the idea of balance, the author advances an urban space expansion theory of dynamics-harmony-optimization, new-town construction method of 'right time-right location-right level' and the idea of building village-in-city by means of the integration of cities and suburbs.Part III: Methodology and Strategies, including two chapters. First, from the viewpoint of implementing urban planning in reality, the author sets forth the idea of infinite urban planning, including conscious finding of God, ancestry and self, the planning and design methodology of 'two basis, one estimate and one preservation', and hence the infinite planning model throughout the planning procedure. Conclusion: from the viewpoint of modern urbanism, the author advocates the idea and process of development balance, including the balance of history and present situation, man-made and nature, efficiency and energy, and survival and development. Last, the author advances the idea named 'House of Balance' for the urban development during the rapid urbanization.
