The ecosystem service function of urban waterfront is the most active and energetic part in a city. Interior cities and coastal cities alike regard the development and utilization of waterside resources as hot spots for the concentration of industries and promotion of urban development. As the urbanization of coastal waterfronts rapidly expands, human economic activities, in gaining economic interests, increase the harm done to the ecosystem service function of waterfronts. Therefore the coordination study of development and protection of ecosystem service function of waterfront is both of theoretical importance and of practical significance in ensuring sustainable development of ecosystem service and harmony between mankind and nature. The present study integrates knowledge of multiple disciplines and focuses on regional serious ecological issues. The study starts by revealing the threatening effects on waterfronts in coastal cities by human activities, analyzes and establishes coordinating modes to harmonize regional development and ecosystem service function protection, proposes strategies and measures to prevent the decline of ecosystem service function and maintain regional ecological safety. The study also explores effective approaches to influence government decision-making and control human economic activities to the direction of favoring the protection of ecosystem service function. The major achievements of the study include the following:(1) On the basis of the discussion about rapid development trend in coastal cities, the study analyzes the ever strong environment pressure on the waterfronts in coastal cities in China, reveals the lessons learned from the study of typical destruction of regional ecosystem and recovery of ecosystem. The causes and processes of decline of ecosystem service function led to by the destruction of environment by human economic activities.(2) The paper selects classical waterfront of coastal cities from south of Fijian province as cases. Xinglin Bay of Xiamen city where economy is relatively developed is used as one case. Xinglin Bay is a typical lake waterfront. Another case is the southeastern coastal zone of Dongshan where economy is undeveloped. Combining theory with practice, the study puts forward nine principles in the solution of the conflicts between the development of waterfront and the protection of ecosystem service function in coastal cities, establishes general models for the coordination of regional development and ecosystem service function protection and discusses the application significance of these models. On the basis of the analysis and identification of the threatening pressure of human developmental activities upon waterfront and with a view to human economic behavior, the study suggests systematic comprehensive measures in the protection and cultivation of ecosystem service function of waterfront. The study plays a role of guidance for case studies and the protection of waterfront ecosystem service function in Chinese coastal cities and...
