"Ecological Network City" (ENC) is a description of the spatial structure and external manifestation of modern urbanized areas. The "network" here includes both real material networks and the invisible virtual ones. "ENC" in this dissertation is not only an urban form, but also a research method. By the aid of modern information technologies and the knowledge of regional integrated development, "ENC" becomes an important technique in the analysis of urban development, city administration and ensuing monitoring and evaluation. With the fast advancement of Information Network Technologies and the growth of cities, the urbanized areas become increasingly "networked". By using the thoughts and methods in modern network analysis, we can make a thorough study on the simulation and prediction of urban growth and, lay a solid foundation for urban planning and administration. The main contents of this dissertation are divided into two parts: 1) the theoretical system of "ENC" and, 2) the case study of Lanzhou and its neighboring areas. The method employed in this dissertation include: Literal Review, Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) technologies, Spatial Analysis, Statistical Analysis and the methods of Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation (PM&E). The main contents are listed as follows:Firstly, the theoretical analysis: the history and evolution of "ENC" studies, the constitution of "ENC" and its characteristics.Secondly, the combination of quantitative and qualitative study: data retrieval, the establishment of GIS database and consequent statistical analysis. In the third part, by employing methods of Landscape Ecology, we build an ecological networking model for Lanzhou and its neighboring areas, and make an investigation on its network connectivity, the landscape changes and the zoning of major geological disasters. Also in this part, we put forward some suggestions on the construction of the three "Ecological Protective Screens" of Lanzhou areas and on the ecological conservation of this region. In the fourth part, we make a study of the impact of human activities on the ecological corridors of Lanzhou area by analysis on the history of human activities and the development of eco-environment and urban growth of typical corridors of this area. In the fifth part, by the aid of RS and GIS technologies, we construct a virtual urban network of Lanzhou area and make related assessments on the Corridor Effects of urban growth, the conditions of the integrated development of urban system and the progress of transportation networks.
