The basic phytogeographic character and species diversity of Typical Evergreen Broad-Leaved Forest (TEBLF) in China was studied by collecting both field vegetation and distribution data (using a 1° grid cell) for representative species of TEBLF, The phytogeographical mechanisms controlling species diversity patterns were also described. The main results were as follows:1. There were 183 families, with 843 genera, including 3160 species in the flora of TEBLF in China. In all, 58.6% of species were endemic to China and 32 4% to the Mid-subtropical region.2. Analysis of areal-types of the floristic elements showed that the TEBLF in China is characterized by tropical influences on its families, sub-tropical influences on its genera and temperate influences on its species. It is suggested that the flora of TEBLF in China is best described as subtropical and has a development tendency from tropical to temperate.3. There are 11 characteristic families, including Lauraceae, Theaceae, Magnoliaceae, Aquifoliaceae, Fagaceae, Cornaceae, Myrsinaceae, Vitaceae, Symplocaceae, Styracaceae and Hamamelidaceae; and 22 characteristic genera, such as Castanopsis, Lithocarpus, Cyclobalanopsis, Machilus, Cinnammomun, Camellia, Eurya and Litsea. This conclusion is based on numerical analysis, which confirmed and reinforced the description of dominant families and genera within the 《Vegetation of China》 . The author believes that these are the representative taxa of TEBLF.4. Characteristic range sizes of representative TEBLF speciesThe frequency distribution of representative species range sizes of TEBLF is log-normal, which means that species with small range sizes are dominant, while species with large range sizes are rare. Most of the geometry of range size is from west-east The average range size of representative genera...
