The Association Between The Family Atmosphere And Suicidal Ideation: The Chain Mediation Effect Of Secure Attachment And Cognitive Flexibility

With the ever developing of the social economy,the challenges to human survival are also increasing.Studies show that the rate of suicidal ideation among young people has more than doubled since the COVID-19 outbreak.Studies have found that parent-child communication and family function are important predictors of suicidal ideation in adolescents,and there is a significant correlation between family atmosphere and suicidal ideation.Based on previous research,this study introduces two variables,secure attachment and cognitive flexibility,to explore the relationship between family atmosphere and suicidal ideation,and the chain mediating role of secure attachment and cognitive flexibility in the relationship between family atmosphere and suicidal ideation.This study reveals the relationship between bad family atmosphere and suicidal ideation among young people,to understand the influencing factors related to suicidal ideation,emphasizing the importance of creating a good family atmosphere,providing a reference for the prevention of suicidal ideation,and promoting the physical and mental health of young people.This study used a combination of questionnaires and qualitative interviews.A total of 976 young people participated in the study.They completed the Family Dynamic Systems Scale,the Attachment Questionnaire,the Cognitive Flexibility Scale,and the Suicidal Ideation Self-Assessment Scale.After the data were collected and collated,SPSS 25.0 was used to analyze the reliability of all the questions of the scale.Subsequently,descriptive analysis,correlation analysis,t-tests,etc.were performed on the data.Model 6 in the PROCESS macro plug-in was selected for the mediating effect test.Study 2 used semi-structured interviews to further explore the specific mechanisms of family atmosphere,secure attachment,cognitive flexibility,and suicidal ideation,and encoded the interview results to provide more in-depth explanations based on questionnaire surveys.The results of the study are as follows:(1)There are significant differences between religious belief and annual family economic income in young people’s suicidal ideation;Gender,whether growing up in a single-parent family,parents’ education level and family annual income are significantly different in family atmosphere.Demographic variables such as gender,whether they are only children,and whether they have religious beliefs do not significantly impact on secure attachment.There are significant differences in cognitive flexibility among gender,single child or not,parents’ education level,and annual family income.The demographic variable of romantic presence and absence did not differ significantly in terms of family atmosphere,secure attachment,cognitive flexibility,or suicidal ideation.(2)Family atmosphere,secure attachment,cognitive flexibility and suicidal ideation were significantly correlated.Family atmosphere was negatively correlated with suicidal ideation,while secure attachment was positively correlated with family atmosphere and negatively correlated with suicidal ideation.Cognitive flexibility was positively correlated with family atmosphere and negatively correlated with suicidal ideation.Secure attachment is positively correlated with cognitive flexibility.(3)Secure attachment mediates between family atmosphere and suicidal ideation.(4)Cognitive flexibility mediates between family atmosphere and suicidal ideation.(5)Secure attachment and cognitive flexibility act as a chain mediator between family atmosphere and suicidal ideation.Based on the above results,it is concluded that family atmosphere can directly predict suicidal ideation negatively,and after introducing secure attachment and cognitive flexibility into the analysis model,it is found that the level of suicidal ideation in young people can further affect the level of suicidal ideation in young people by exerting effect on secure attachment and cognitive flexibility.
