ObjectiveThe objective was to collate,report,and critique published evidence related to the effect of quality of life in presbyopia,raising awareness in the presbyopia prevention and treatment.Based on the traditional Chinese medicine concept of "Eye should Exercise rugularly",this research aims at providing theoretical basis of it through randomized,controlled clinical research evaluating the effect of "Yunmu Cao" on presbyopia,and also providing experience for further seeking of no-drug health care methods from traditional Chinese medicine ancient books.Methods1 Searches were conducted in the Pubmed,Embase,Web of Science,Cochrane Library,CNKI,VIP,WanFang Data from the time of database inception through January 1,2022.The key search terms for retrieving studies of interest were"presbyopia," "quality of life," "patient reported outcome,""activities of daily living"in Chinese and English.The retrieved literature was screened,and the subjects were patients with presbyopia.The outcome indicators reported vision related quality of life,the impact of daily activities,the utility related to presbyopia and subjective wellbeing.These literatures were analyzed to explore the impact of presbyopia on quality of life.2 Sixty-eight patients who saw a doctor in Eye Hospital China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences were selected with presbyopia 40-55 years old,mean age 48.93±3.50 years,were randomly recruited for a prospective control study.The patients were randomly divided into two groups.Treatment groups received for 6-9 minutes persession,2 times per everyday over an eight weeks period "Yunmu Cao" training while controlled group instead of health education.The data for diopter,near point of accommodation,reading vision,reading speed,objective visual quality(including MTF cut off and Mean OSI)and subjective symptoms(including difficulty near vision,reading fatigue,temporary blurred vision,sore eyes,and dizziness after prolonged vision)were measured for each patient at two time points:before training,and 8 weeks after "Yunmu Cao" treatment.Results1 DiopterAfter 8 weeks "Yunmu Cao”training,7 cases in the "Yunmu Cao" group were effective,accounting for 11.7%,invalid 63 cases,accounting for 88.3%;2 cases in the control group were effective,accounting for 3.2%.invalid 60 cases,accounting 96.8%.There was not statistical significance between two groups after intervention(P>0.05).2 Near point of accommodationBefore intervention."Yunmu Cao" group’s near point of accommodation is 55.50±15.27 cm,after 8 weaks it was 50.81±14.01 cm,the datas were statistically significant(P<0.05);Before intervention control group’s near point of accommodation is 49.79±18.03cm,aftert 8 weaks it was 48.44±16.54cm,the datas were not statistically significant(P>0.05);There was not statistical significance between two groups after intervention(P>0.05).3 Reading acuity and speedBefore intervention,"Yunmu Cao" group’s reading acuity is 4.02(1.51)pt,after 8 weaks it was 3.51(1.39)pt,the datas were statistically significant(P<0.05);Before intervention,control group’s reading acuity is 4.02(1.51)pt,after 8 weaks it was 4.02(1.51)pt,the datas were not statistically significant(P>0.05);There was statistical significance between two groups after intervention(P<0.05).Before intervention,"Yunmu Cao" group’s reading speed is 207.98±36.90 words/min,after 8 weeks it was 218.68±35.01 words/min,the datas were statistically significant(P<0.05):Before control group’s reading acuity is 225.23±33.46 words/min,after treatment it was 229.25±28.08 words/min,the datas were not statistically significant(P>0.05);There was not statistical significance between two groups after intervention(P>0.05).4 Objective visual qualityBefore intervention,"Yunmu Cao" group’s MTF cut off is 35.17±10.08,after 8 weeks it was 34.63±10.13,the datas were not statistically significant(P>0.05);Before intervention,control group’s MTF cut off is 33.81 ± 11.75,after 8 weeks it was 30.70±9.97,the datas were statistically significant(P<0.05);There was statistical significance between two groups after intervention(P<0.05).Before intervention."Yunmu Cap" group’s Mean OSI is 1.26(1.15),after 8 weeks it was 0.99(1.06),the datas were not statistically significant(P>0.05);Before intervention,control group’s Mean OSI is 1.15(0.73),after 8 weeks it was 1.27(1.07),the datas were statistically significant(P<0.05);There was statistical significance between two groups after intervention(P<0.05).5 Subjective symptomsBefore intervention,"Yunmu Cao" group’s subjective symptoms grades is 8.00±2.45,after 8 weeks it was 5.53±2.16,the data was statistically significant(P<0.05);Before intervention,control group’s subjective symptoms grades is 7.16±2.48,after 8 weeks it was 7.16±2.90,the dataa were not statistically significant(P>0.05);There was statistical significance between two groups after intervention(P<0.05).Conclusions1 Uncorrected presbyopia affects visual quality and daily life,reducing the patients’quality of life.2 "Yunmu Cao" can improve the reading acuity and speed,near point of accommodation and subjective symptoms in presbyopia to varying degrees.It can be promoted as an intervention for presbyopia. |
