Based on the theory of Media Frame,this paper takes the Wuhan reports in the four authority English media of New York Times,Financial Times,Australians and The Straits Times in the Lexis&Nexis database as the research object.The research method combining quantitative content analysis and qualitative discourse analysis on the media image of Wuhan city.In the first round of sampling,a total of]315 Wuhan-related reports were collected from four newspapers from 2000 to 2018.This screening process found that more than 80%of the first round samples were invalid.Wuhan only appears as background information in these news reports without any description,substantial introduction or follow-up text.After a second round of manual screening,the total number of samples was 157.This reflects the obscure visibility of "Wuhan" in the international authoritative English news media.The research based on content analysis found that(1)since 2007,the total number of reports related Wuhan showed a tortuous upward trend,with a growth of 330%from 2007 to 2010 and 100%from 2011 to 2015.(2)News(69.43%)was the most used news genre,followed by communication(12.74%)and column(8.28%).(3)News agenda mainly cover the economic sector(49.05%),followed by culture(20.38%)and people's livelihood(20.38%).(4)Among the four newspapers,the news with no obvious bias accounting for 55.41%of the total sample.And the news with a negative attitude at 28.66%proportion.Positive news accounted for 15.29%;(5)Enterprises and other non-governmental organizations or members(23.56%)and the general public(20.67%)are the two main sources of foreign media reports;(6)"Iron and steel"(508 times),"industry"(179 times),"central"(163 times),"joint venture"(150 times),"Li"(138 times),"Zeng"(119 times)and other words are frequently used in news texts about Chinese.Based on the findings of discourse analysis,Wuhan's overseas media image includes(1)large multinational enterprises have strengthened the economic image of Wuhan's industrial town,and millions of people have become potential market for overseas companies;(2)the characteristic diets highlight Wuhan's cultural image,and municipal news is the front reflecting the traditional Chinese culture;(3)the geographical location of Wuhan is out of focus,and the labels such as "Digging Around the City","Furnace city" and "Flooding frequently" constitute the image of Wuhan;(4)positive typical figures and negative ordinary people constitute the group image of Wuhan.The study points out that there is a certain difference in Wuhan image between overseas media and Wuhan authorities.Based on this,it is urgent to accurately position and improve Wuhan's overseas media image in four aspects.First,the government should establish "We Media" matrix,actively respond to external concerns and lead agenda setting.Second,short video is used to excavate the "delicate and small fragments" of the city to convey the multi-label of the city.Third,the use of "Maga-event",accurate positioning of the image of the city,polishing the city personality label.Fourth,attach importance and enhance the international influence of transnational enterprises.
