[Objective]Previous study found that patient satisfaction is an indicator of the quality of primary care.England and some other countries where general practice have developed well, have been using specific questionnaires to assess general practice, such as GPAQ(General Practice Assessment Questionnaire)?PCAT(Primary Care Assessment Tool)and so on.However, currently there are no such questionnaires in China.A few studies in China have adopted foreign or self-made questionnaires to investigate patients-views on general practice, but there are some limitations.Firstly, the closed-ended questions with a list of answer choices used by the questionnaires are mostly likely to limit patients' response.Secondly, questions in different self-made questionnaires varied considerably.Using semi-structured interview, this study explored Chinese patients' views on general practice in a different way.[Methods, setting and participants]We recruited 27 patients attending the GP clinic at Peking Union Medical College Hospital(PUMCH)and PUMCH-affiliated community health centres in the Dongcheng district of Beijing for a face-to-face semi-structured interview. The interview schedule was designed based on GPAQ.The whole interviews were recorded with interviewers' consent. The audio-recorded interviews were transcribed and imported into Nvivo 12 to generate themes using inductive coding scheme under phenomenology strategy.[Results]Based on 1064 codes in first-level coding, five themes were generated in this study, including patients' perspectives about general practitioner, status of general practice, the necessity, rationale and challenge of developing general practice.
