| Pictorial is a kind of periodical with pictures as the main part and words as the auxiliary.The earliest pictorial newspapers appeared in China in the 1870 s,and up to the 1940 s,about800 kinds of pictorial newspapers were published.The children's monthly,founded in 1874,has the news and picture features of pictorial newspapers,which can be regarded as the sprout of modern Chinese pictorial newspapers.After the founding of "good friend" pictorial,a large number of pictorial appeared.There are not only comprehensive pictorials like The Cosmopolitan and The Pei-Yang Pictorial News,but also thematic pictorials like exquisite and movie pictorial.Until the outbreak of the all-round Anti Japanese War,China's modern pictorial entered a downturn in development.Starting from the study of the stages of modern Chinese pictorial,this paper divides the stages of modern pictorial into four stages: the germination stage(1874-1884),the initial stage(1884-1907),the peak stage(1907-1937),and the downturn stage(1937-1949)It has research value and significance.The Young Companion was founded by Mr.Wu Liande in 1926,and closed in 1945,with a total of 174 issues,including two special issues.A total of 7000 copies have been sold for the first issue,which is not only popular in China,but also exported abroad.It has the reputation of "The Young Companion all over the world".In this paper,through a case study of The Young Companion,using the knowledge of editing and publishing,the content characteristics,editing characteristics and management characteristics of The Young Companion pictorial are analyzed in depth.First of all,the course of running a magazine of The Young Companion has been sorted out.After four times of suspension and one after another revision,it has made itself stand out among many modern pictorial newspapers.Secondly,from the content characteristics of The Young Companion in the selection,the selection of The Young Companion is extensive and unique,attracting a large number of readers,while the column setting keeps pace with the times,so that The Young Companion gradually gets rid of the label of entertainment,and gradually develops towards politicization;in the focus,it mainly focuses on social celebrities and fashion elements.Thirdly,The Young Companion has its own unique perspective on the editorial features of pictures,languages and layout.At the same time,the business features of The Young Companion are another major driving force for its success.It focuses on the establishment of excellent teams,the talent management mode oftalent selection,the awareness of serving readers,the interaction with readers,and the marketing and advertising management.Finally,through the This paper summarizes the characteristics and practical activities of The Young Companion pictorial in editing activities,and provides valuable experience and ideas for modern editing work. |
