Using bibliometrics methods such as word frequency analysis,co-occurrence analysis as well as co-citation analysis, and social network analysis, this research draws a panoramic description of 9162 new media research papers published in all 1998-2016 CSSCI journals from the aspects of keywords, citations, researchers and institutions, building knowledge maps of nearly 20-year mew media research in mainland China with the help of professional software CiteSpace and Ucinet.Through co-occurrence of keywords,K-core analysis and bursts detect, the analysis describes the overall trend and evolution of main research areas, finding that the rise of social media such as Weibo is the biggest shock to new media research. The evolution of hot issues changes significantly around 2008,which means the year 2008 can be seen as a watershed. Some early issues disappeared in main research area, and topics like social media, media convergence, big data and online public opinion have been thriving in recent years. All the topics in different time periods show the obvious feature of being guided by practices or technological innovations, and the research also reveals problems that there has been a lack of integrity and durability in our new media research as well as insecure theoretical foundations.Through co-citation and co-occurrence analysis of cited references, researchers, journals and institutions, the research shows some key information like important references, core journals, authoritative researchers and productive institutions, finding that the number of key references is too few,and there is a lack of common knowledge foundation in subdivisions;authoritative researchers are mainly formed by 50 or 60's famous scholars from superb journalism and communication or information management colleges, and cooperation modes of researchers are so unitary with unstable network structure;new media research now is mainly led by colleges with famous journalism and communication specialties, and the cooperation of institutions is far from enough.
