ObjectiveTo investigation the characteristics and distribution and symptom severity of lower urinary tract symptoms(LUTS)of outpatients with benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH)in Lvliang people's hospital.MethodsA structured interviewer administered questionnaire surveys were completed by outpatients with BPH after clinical diagnosis who accept the questionnaire during the April to October in 2016.International Prostate Symptom Score(IPSS)and QOL used in the evaluation of LUTS.Results478 cases of BPH patients divided into four groups including 51-60,61-70,71-80 and >80 years old,and the number among all groups were 77(16.11%),129(26.98%),154(32.22%).118(24.69%)respectively.The average volume of the prostate in all patients were 38.06 ml ± 13.78 ml.Prostate volume among the four age groups respectively were 32.16 ± 9.47 ml,34.89 ± 14.83 ml,39.94 ± 12.70 ml,42.90 ± 14.21 ml,the differences was statistically significant(P < 0.05),while increasingly with the age.There were 432 cases(91.38%)moderate and severe LUTS in all patients,among the four age groups the cases number were 62(82.82%),113(87.60%),145(94.16%),111(94.07%)respectively.The mean of the scores of QOL scale in all cases were 4.20 ± 1.39,and the total quantity of patients with 4 points,5 points or 6 points of QOL scores were 352,accounting(73.64%).The BPH patients with acute urinary retention(total 76cases)among the four age groups were 5(6.58%),17(22.37%),26(34.21%),28(36.84%),the differences was statistically significant(P < 0.05).meanwhile,the occurrence rate of acute urinary retention was progressing with age.ConclusionPatients with moderate and severe LUTS were in a large proportion of total outpatients with BPH and who were suffering a poor quality of life.It reflected that patients with BPH have a poor consciousness and to see a doctor later.More attention should be paid to men with BPH.They need to raise their awareness on see a doctor and get treatment early and can live a better quality of life.
