Objective: To learn about the culturing cognition and teaching corecapabilities of clinical advisers for master of nursing specialist students,and to provide evidence for selecting and training clinical advisers.Methods: A questionnaire survey was completed among66clinicaladvisers for master of nursing specialist students, who came from4affiliated teaching hospitals of Chongqing Medical University. Thequestionnaire survey contained the following three sections: basic situation,culturing cognition of master of nursing specialist students, self-evaluationof teaching core capabilities. The previous two parts of survey weredeveloped by researchers, and Self-evaluation of teaching core capabilitieswas measured by the Clinical Nursing Teachers Core Capabilities GraphicRating Scale.Results: Four (6.06%)advisers were at Master degree or above,sixty-two (93.94%) with undergraduate educational level;Twenty-one(31.82%) co-chief nurse or above, thirty-one (46.97%)nurse-in-charge and fourteen (21.21%) nurse practitioners; Forty-five(68.18%) with more than eleven years, ten(15.15%) with nursingage between three and five years; All of them had experienced directingundergraduate nursing students, only seven (10.61%) had ever guidedgraduate nursing students. And twenty (30.30%) had presided nursingresearch subjects. They generally knew little about the culturing of masterof nursing specialist students. The self evaluation total score for corecapabilities was120.55±7.37, containing professional capability(4.47±0.34), leadership capability (4.01±0.22), problem solving capability(3.89±0.30) and education teaching capability (3.65±0.23).The highestscored item was the capability to set good examples for nursing students(4.44±0.59). The lowest scored item was the capability to do scientificresearch (3.29±0.89).Conclusion: Generally the elder, high educational degree and seniorprofessional title nurses were selected as clinical advisers for MNS; Andthey were universally short of graduate students guiding experience, andknew little about the culturing. Those advisers were prepared for coreteaching competency in some extent but were feeble at scientific research.It is suggested to provide the clinical advisers more training on teachingcognition for graduate students and improve their competency to performscientific research.
