The Operation And Development Of Institutional Repositories Of University

With the development of information technology, traditional science communication which is based on paper publications has been behind the high speed information exchange in the era of network. Then, there appeared open access movement. With the continuous development of the open access movement, the institutional repository as one of its companion product, have gained considerable progress both in theory and practice building. It gradually developed into a support system which is scientific research institutions, universities and other knowledgeintensive units provide user-oriented research and information management from a disciplines library mode which shared information based preprint. In recent years, it has been recognized by the majority of experts an d scholars and become a hot topic in the field of library information, information management, and so on.In this context, this dissertation composed to construct institution repository to promote the intelligent process of research and information, combing the demand of Shandong University of Technology in the aspect of scientific information management. Building an institutional repository of their own improves not only teachers’ and students’ management levels of scientific information but also the university internal storage capacity and utilization of intellectual assets, making exploring for the development of institutional repositories as far as possible.Firstly, this dissertation combed the development process of the institutional repository, investigated the domestic and foreign theoretical study and practice of building, analyzed the current emphasis and focus, revealed the trends and levels of institutional repositories, and explained the significance of building institutional repository for Shandong University of Technology.Secondly, in order to understand the need and feasibility of building ins titutional repository in this university, it carried out a questionnaire on school graduate research information management by focusing on knowing the graduate users ’ research management habits and expectations. On this basis, combining the university’s environment, this dissertation also conducted a SWOT analysis on the construction of institutional repository from the four aspects: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, offering the system analysis and decision support for the construction of institutional repository.Thirdly, this dissertation described the main features and basic running processes of DSpace system, built a prototype institutional repository system based on DSpace software, built an institutional repository test system faced graduate and started testing based on this system.Lastly, in order to promote the development of DSpace system, it proposed the functional orientation, deposit strategies and development strategies based on the student users by combing with the actual situation in schools and building experience of domestic and foreign institutional repositories.
