With the development of Open Access movements worldwide, Institutional Repository has been widely recognized as a new infrastructure for scholar communication and resource sharing. Academic institutions, universities in particular, began to construct their own IR systems one after another in order to capture and preserve their intellectual output perpetually. In the constructing process, however, many universities abroad encountered some difficulties in content obtain, policy issues and strategic planning. Consequently, how to make more effective use of Institutional Repository becomes the key success factor in IR construction.Though there are no consistent standards among researchers on functional role of IR and content types within it, it can figure out that Institutional Repository will shift from relatively independent, stand-alone system to distributed, federated and highly integrated applications and services. Some universities in Europe and in the United States have tried to embed IR deeply into the institution's information environment, so as to associate IR with academic practices and raise faculty's interests. The integration of IR and scholarly information environment is implemented mainly by interoperability between IR and existing information systems. The subject of this dissertation was proposed under the background above. The dissertation focuses on the study of Institutional Repository interoperability and aims to promote a common, service-oriented interoperable model to help to extend the applications of IR in academic institutions. To achieve this purpose, we conducted the research and implement on DSpace system, which is a popular open-source IR software platform. The remainder of this dissertation is organized as follows. Firstly, we discussed the current development of IR to introduce the core research subjects and main purposes. Then the outline was presented for covered content.Secondly, we explored the strategic influence of IR from different perspectives, and took DSpace as an example to analyze the architecture of IR software. Then several IR related projects were demonstrated to show how IR can be applied in universities.Thirdly, based on analysis of university's scholar information environment, combined with the development trend of information service, we identified the importance of IR and potential requirements related to its interoperability. Then we made a comparison of existing interoperability technologies to find out their shortcomings, at the same time, absorb the advantages. With the research work on IR and scholar information environment above, we described IR interoperability in several levels: metadata interoperability, digital object interoperability, business logic interoperability, and information page interoperability. We talked about the component and mechanism of each interoperable level, and integrated them into a service-oriented interoperability framework. Consequently, we emphasized the key aspects in implementation. Finally, this dissertation describes the application and implementation of interoperability framework over current information environment according to development strategy of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. By choosing appropriate technology, the interoperability framework can be implemented successfully. As a theoretical framework, there may be some slight problems in practice. So we have to embrace continual improvement and make it more applicable.
