Jiao Tong University was established by an Chinese government officer: Sheng Xuanhuai. St. John University was founded by American missionary institution---the Episcopal Church. For the different purposes, Jiao Tong University and St. John University formed a great deal of differences on the characteristics. Based on the comparison between Jiao Tong University and St. John’s University, we could found that St. John’s Universities usually aimed to spread their religion, and the departments were just set for the purpose of missionary and market, with the designed of curriculum only focusing on the Western culture, which caused the imbalance of St. John university between Chinese education and Western education. However, Jiao Tong University tried to meet the social needs, and the departments were set for the purpose of social development, and the Western and Chinese culture were both considered when they designed the content of course. On the school management, Jiao Tong University and St. John University were more democratic and free after reforms. From the overall, we can easily deduce that Jiao Tong University always reformed in time and raised its school running level to meet the requirements of social development in our country, though it was relatively weak when it started. Meanwhile, St. John Universities could adjust its strategies and form its distinguished characteristics, providing reference for the development and reforms of Chinese National Universities.
