Relationship Between Achievement Motivation And Core Competency Among Nurses In Three Tertiary Hospitals Of Zhuzhou City

Objective:To describe the achievement motivation and core competency among registered nurses in tertiary hospitals in Zhuzhou, and analyze the correlation between nurses’achievement motivation and core competency.Methods:Cross-section design was used. With convenience sampling, nurses from three tertiary hospitals were investigated. The questionnaire included:general information questionnaire, Achievement Motivation Scale, Competency Inventory for Registered Nurse (CIRN). All the data was analyzed by software SPSS19.0using descriptive statistics, t-test, variances and multiple linear regression.Results:1. A total of350questionnaires were given off,302(86.3%) effective recovery.2.The total score of achievement motivation was (0.12±0.64), the score of motivation of seeking success was (2.64±0.45), and the score of motivation of avoiding failure was (2.52±0.46).3. The total score of core competency was (159.48±31.13). The dimension of ethical&law practice got the highest score that was (3.05±0.66), while the dimension of critical thinking&scientific research ability got the lowest score, which was (2.55±0.59).4.Employment relationship had impact on the achievement motivation, and the coefficient of determination was0.083.5.Nursing age and achievement motivation had impact on core competency, and the coefficient of determination was0.066.6. The correlation between achievement motivation and core competency:there was a positive correlation between the total score of achievement motivation and core competency. There was a positive correlation between the motivation of seeking success and the capability of critical thinking&scientific research, clinical nursing, leadership, interpersonal relationship, ethical&law practice, professional development, and education&consultation. There was a positive correlation between the motivation of avoiding failure and the capability of critical thinking&scientific research and education&consultation.Conclusions:1. The achievement motivation among nurses in tertiary hospitals in Zhuzhou is at high level, and the score of the core competence is medium.2. The official nurses had higher achievement motivation than contract system nurses.3. The core competency increases with the increasing achievement motivation.4. There was a positive correlation between the total score of achievement motivation and core competency.
