OBJECTIVETo investigate the status of nursing core competency and explore its influencing factors so as to provide references to enhance nurses'core competencies appropriately for nursing supervisors.METHODSThe study was carried out in three 3-A hospitals in Hengyang city by the facilitating cluster sampling method from January to March in 2010. 852 registered nurses were invited to participate. Data were collected by competency inventory for registered nurse (CIRN), team-in-hospital organization climate scale, 16PF and demography data. The statistical software SPSSl3.0 was used to analyze the collected data, the statistical methods included statistical description, Two-sample t-test, one-way ANOVA,pearson inter-correlation,and multiple linear regression analysis.RESULTS1 The average score of nursing core competency was 2.59±0.66, at middle level.The mean scores of the dimensions of CIRN arranged in descending order as follows: legal and ethical practice, leadership, interpersonal relationships, professional development, clinical care, teaching-coaching, and critical thinking and research aptitude.2 The average scores of nursing core competency and seven dimensions were significant differences respectively among nurses with different ages, service years, professional titles, administrative ranks, organizational forms, marital statuses, educational experiences and specialization interests (P <0.05). The average scores of nursing core competency and six dimensions except clinical care among nurses with different academic degrees were significant differences (P <0.05). 3 The average score of organization climate of the team in hospital was 4.60±0.76, at upper level. There were significant correlation with the scores of nursing core competency and organization climate of the team in hospital (P <0.05).4 The scores of 4 personality factors (A,F,H,Q4) were significantly higher than those of norm, and the scores of 6 personality factors (C, G,L,O,Q1,Q2) were significantly lower than those of norm (P<0.05). There were significant correlation with the scores of nursing core competency and 10 personality factors (A, C, F, G, H, Q3, X2, D1, D2, D3, I, M, O, Q2, Q4, X1) (P <0.05).5 The main predicting factors of nursing core competency were varieties ways to learn professional knowledge, professional title, patience-staff comprehension and communication, factor X2, specialization interest, marital status, factorⅠ, the situations of receiving training and organizational form. They all accounted for 49.5% of the variance.CONCLUSION1 The score of nursing core competency were at the middle level.2 The scores of nursing core competency for registered nurses had significantly difference in terms of age, service-year, professional title, administrative rank, organizational form, marital status, academic degree, educational experience and specialization interest.3 Nursing managers should take some reasonable measures to enhance nurses'core competencies, including encouraging nurses to learn professional knowledge by varieties ways, creating a good organizational climate, cultivating great personalities, developing professional interests and providing them training opportunity.
