Objective To develop an instrument to indentify the teaching competence of clinical teachers for undergraduate nursing and evaluate its reliability and validity. To assess the competency of registered nurse and teaching of clinical nursing teacher in affiliated teaching hospitals in Shandong province and analyze the influencing factors. To analyze the difference of teacher’s self-evaluation, nursing manager’s evaluation and student’s evaluation on the clinical teacher’s competency.MethodsTheoretical framework, literature review and Expert Consultation, pre-investigating, investigating, reliability and validity analysis were used to develop the inventory. All data were statistically analyzed by software package SPSS16.0for windows, and statistical methods such as Item-Content Validity Index, Cronbach’a coefficient, correlation analysis, T-Test, factor analysis, description, rank sum test and optional scale analysis were used. Convenience sampling method was used to collect126samples of clinical nursing teachers who met the inclusion criteria from4affiliated teaching hospitals in Jinan, General information questionnaire, competency inventory for registered nurse and teaching competency inventory scale were used to carry out one-on-one with a teacher self-assessment, nursing manager’s assessment and evaluation of nursing students, using descriptive analysis, paired t test or Wilcoxon rank sum test to analyze the differences of self-assessment and other’s related evaluation, and to explore the reasons for the differences.Results1.The results of item analysis showed that the critical ratio of all items were more than0.30and significant (CR=10.937-19.067, P<0.01), the item-scale correlation coefficients were more than0.40and significant (r=0.59-0.77, P<0.01). The results of validity analysis showed that the facial validity was good and the I-CVI was more than0.78,1component was extracted for every dimension and the total percentage of variance for each dimension was more than50%. The results of reliability revealed that the Cronbach’ α was0.967(P<0.01), the inter-rater reliability was0.96(P<0.01)2. The distribution differences of Shandong province nursing teachers’ self-assessment competency for registered nurse and teaching in different departments, age groups, work experience groups, professional titles, first degree groups were statistically significant, optional scale analysis showed that the competency of self-assessment affected by a variety of factors, such as professional titles and age groups.3. The clinical teachers’ self-assessment of the competency for registered nurse was lower than the managers’ assessment and nursing students’ assessment, the clinical teachers’ self-assessment of the competency for clinical teaching was lower than the managers’ assessment, the clinical teachers’ satisfaction with teaching work was also lower the managers’ assessment and nursing students’ assessment, the differences were all statistically significant.Conclusions1. The competency inventory for teaching for clinical nursing teacher is reliable and valid and can be a useful tool for academic research and clinical practice.2. Competency for registered nurse and clinical teaching of clinical nursing teachers is affected by working experience and profession title.3. Clinical teachers’ self-identification and self-satisfactory with their job is lower than the managers’ assessment and nursing students’ assessment.
