SD card (Secure Digital Memory Card) Chinese translation for secure digital card, which is based on a semiconductor flash memory of a new generation of memory equipment, it is widely used in portable devices, such as digital cameras, personal digital assistant (PDA) and multimedia player. Size is a stamp of SD memory card, weight only2grams, but has a high memory capacity, fast data transfer rate, great mobile flexibility and good safety. FPGA has a high flexibility, short development cycle, fast parallel processing, and high reliability. In addition, because FPGA is a programmable logic device, users can reconfigure the FPGA, in order to achieve the user logic. It also has a static repeatable programming and dynamic system reconfiguration characteristics. Based on the SD card application range and FPGA design flexibility and high efficiency, the SD card controller design will be of great significance.This paper first introduces the application background of SD card as well as the selected topic significance and prospect. Then elaborated the SD card protocol specification and working process, which includes a SD card pin, working mode and SD card reset timing, initialization timing, a read operation and a write operation sequence of content; again briefly introduces design needed for hardware description language, and to design the module are analyzed in detail, including SPI module and the main control module; then introduces the verification tool Modelsim and the validation environment to build and simulation, the results accord with the protocol specification; finally introduced the design tool of Quartus Ⅱ and FPGA prototype verification system building and debugging, here the use of Quartus Ⅱ test design content and function finally meets the design requirements.
