Objective To investigate nursing managers’ on-the-job training status quo and need in2A or higher level general hospitals in Shandong Province, in order to provide information for establishing and perfecting the head nurse training system of Shandong Province.Methods To form "nursing managers’ on-the-job training status quo and need in2A or higher level general hospitals in Shandong Province questionnaire" through literature review and referring to the domestic related research. Six experts from nursing management domain revised and measured the content validity of the questionnaire, questionnaire were modified after pilot investigate4tertiary hospitals and3secondary hospitals in Shandong Province, the final version formed. The retest reliability were measured by kappa coefficient after two weeks. Questionnaire were issued by17nursing quality control centers in Shandong Province to hospitals were surveyed via E-mail. Data were statistical analyzed using the SPSS17.0with statistical methods include statistical description, chi-square test and logistic regression, the significance level was0.05.Result880head nurse questionnaires were sent,807withdrawn,666valid,129director of nursing department questionnaires were sent,125withdrawn,125valid. The training content of the nursing managers were attending graded hospital evaluation, nursing management training and nursing quality control. Training forms were mainly seminar and short-term training classes. Teachers mainly came from domestic nursing experts.87.8%of the nursing managers did not attend to any personalized assessment before training,59.2%received different forms of assessment or evaluation at the end of the training. Most nursing managers think that there were questions in Previous training, less practical knowledge, single training mode, training pertinence is not strong and level of training teaching not high were the major problems. Training needs of the nursing managers was high, most of which needed training very much, the top three reasons of nursing managers to participate the training were the need of working, broadening horizons and personal development.The demand for training content between the head nurse and director of nursing was not the same. The top three demand for training teachers were the domestic nursing management experts, health care professionals trainers and foreign nursing management experts in turn.Conclusion The systematic, hierarchical, normal, long-term change, required, flexible-form, effective-evaluation, sufficient funds and talent nursing managers training system will be established to improve the nursing management level of the nursing managers fundamentally.
