Objective: To examine the traits of mental health status variation in studentnurses from higher vocational college during clinical nurse internship and the relatedinfluencing factor through tracking measurement at different stages of nuring practicefor timely revealing the psychological problems and scientific intervention basis viamental health eduction. Methods: By cluster sampling, we conducted a survey on350student nurses, admitted in2010, from a Huainan Vocational College. The questionnaire includedCollege Seniors Stress Scale(CSSS). Symptom Checklist90(SCL90) and generaldemographic information, and was used repeatedly for measurement of four times. Thedata collected was input into the software Epidata3.0, and calculated with SPSS18.0.Twosample ttest and repeated measure analysis were applied to examine themutative regular pattern of mental health status. Pearson correlation analysis andstepwise regression analysis were performed to analyze the relationship between thevariation of CSSS and the variation of mental health status in different training stages.Results:①T he twosample ttest analysis indicated that the student nurses scoredhigher on each component of SCL90measured at different stages of their clinicalnurse intership compared to the Youth Norm of China for ages of18to29(P<0.05or0.01);②T he chisquare test revealed no significant difference concerning the incidenceof psychological problems examined at different internship stage (P>0.05);③O newayanalysis of variance showed statistical difference for the total scores on SCL90determined at different stage of internship, with a maximum at T4(P<0.05). The differenceswas also significant between the stage of T0and T4as well as other factors (P<0.05).④Pearson correlation analysissuggested positive correlation on SCL90regarding the frequencies life events, especially the pressures from study, jobapplication, interpersonal relationship and daily life disturbance at the stage of T0, T1, T4and T7, respectively. P<0.05). Besides, the frequencies including daily life disturbance, interpersonal relationship and study pressure were eligible for entery into the regressionequation on stepwise regression analysis (P<0.01).Conclusions:①The mental healh levels of student nurses from highervocational college appeared relatively lower during their clinical nursing internship ascompared with the Youth Norm of China;②The psychological problems wereprominent at the first half stage of nursing practice, and the levels of mental healthtended to decline significantly from the two weeks prior to internship to the end of7thmonth, followed by slight rise, yet the levels remained lower than those before nursingpractice;③The factors affecting the mental health of nursing students varied to a certaindegree at different stages of nurse internship, especially the frequencies and intensity ofstressful events occurring in that period function a lot;④The findings suggest thatmental disturbance seems prevalent in student nurses in different stages of their clinicalinternship, which requires our attention and provision with targeted psychologicalcounseling and support for this student group.
