Background and objective:Bone Mineral Density (BMD) is the index to measure the bonemineral content in unit volume of bone, which is an important item toreflect the bone metabolism of human body and is the main value todiagnose osteoporosis in clinic. Osteoporosis (OP) is a systemic metabolicbone disease characterized by systemic osteopenia, bone microstructuedestruction, increase of bone fragility and fracture liability. Every year inour country,275000cases of hip joint fractures,500000cases of lumbarfractures occurred due to the osteoporosis. And the diseases recovery isslow and seriously affects patients’ quality of life. At present, China hasentered the aging society. Along with the extension of life expectancy andincrease of elderly population proportion, osteoporosis has become the thirdage-related diseases after hypertension and diabetes. Early prevention ofosteoporosis is mainly to obtain the ideal peak bone value and to prevent theloss of bone quantity, and at the time of entering adult hood to pay attentionto risk factors to prevent loss of bone quantity by timely treatment. Thepurpose of this study is to explore the differences of BMD value and peakvalue of BMD of Yantai area health adults and its transformation regularityby QCT method measuring L1-3vertebrae. This study will establish thedatabase of adult normal BMD of north Chinese and accumulate data toprevent and early diagnose osteoporosis.Materials and Methods:755cases of health adults were selected(375were males aged21-79,mean aged44.3±15.2;380were females aged21-79, mean aged45.2± 14.6). These cases were Yantai area normal career resident population withliving time at least more than five years (five years included), no variationof lumbar serialization or lumbarization and no diseases relating to bonedisease. Methods: quantitative CT bone density measurement system wasadopted to test the BMD of lumbar (L1-L3) and bone mineral content byEmotionDuo type CT machine (German Siemens company) and thecorresponding software Osteo. SPSS19.0statistical software was adopt tomanage the data, T value was calculated to measure the incidence of boneloss and osteoporosis, t test to check the significance of mean differences, Xtest to check the significance of incidence of osteoporosis. P <0.05meanssignificant difference.Results:1.The mean value and standard deviation of BMD of male and femalelumbar vertebral cancellous were142.36±18.31mg/cm~3and126.31±19.67mg/cm~3, respectively. The BMD decreased along with the age increase.2. The BMD of male were larger than that of female in different agegroup. Significant difference could be established (P<0.05or P<0.01).3. The peak lumbar BMD value appeared in the age group of20-29forboth male and female in Yantai area. The male average BMD peak value was178.29±32.74mg/cm~3and the female was189.46±34.68mg/cm~3.Bone massdensity declined gradually with age increase. And age group of40-50obviously descended for male and female. The BMD loss of male was moresevere than female before40, however after50the BMD loss of female wassevere than male. The BMD loss of male and female was48.48%and57.70%at age group of70-79.4. The BMD of male at age group of40-49in Yantai area was higherthan in Yangzhou, Hainan and Shenzhen, after40was lower than thoseareas. The BMD of female in Yantai area was lower than in Yangzhou,Hainan and Shenzhen before60, afterwards a little higher than that ofYangzhou and accord with Hainan area.5. Osteoporosis detection rate by T methods for men was17.33%,female27.63%, and those increased with age. After40years old, male andfemale osteopenia and osteoporosis incidence showed difference, and male and female at the age of40-~60-there are significant differences betweeneach age group.Conclusion1. The BMD of Yantai male before the age of40to49is at a higherlevel. After age of50, and all the female BMD are relatively low. All agegroups both male and female, BMD were obviosly decreased with age.2. BMD peak of Yantai region of male and female appeared in the20to29age group, after the age of50the bone loss is accelerated, osteoporosisrate increased and need to be early prevented.3. There are gender and region differences in lumbar vertebralcancellous BMD.4. There are gender and age differences in osteopenia and osteoporosisincidence.
