Objective Using periodontal risk assessment(PRA) to determine the prognosis and recurrence of chronic periodontitis and access the clinical feasibility of PRA and provide guidance of recall interval or appropriate treatment during supportive periodontal therapy(SPT).Methods As a retrospective study, PRA was performed in60patients with chronic periodontitis for18months of SPT. When the subjects were checked up for the first time, some information were collected and recorded from all them about their general symptoms, medical history, family history.diagnosis of diabetes.history of periodontal surgery and smoking; The bone level was detected by panoral radiography and bone loss was accessed by periapical intraoral radiographic if necessary and the periodontal tissue harvested for patients with chronic periodontitis. Initial therapy was started after the clinical examination were completed. At the same time, patients were guided to use dental floss, interproximal brush and appropriate method of brushing; All subjects were inform of the relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease and how to self-monitor blood glucose. The subject were suggested to change to other medicine if oral calcium antagonist was being taken. Patients with smoking habit were informed of the smoking-related harms and healing interference. When the periodontal initial therapy was completed. It was time to the stage of supportive periodontal therapy. One month later, the periodontal tissue status was evaluated again. Referring to the referral time the PRA provided,23regular complier (RC) and37erratic complier (EC) subjects were selected. The change of tooth loss, probing depth, the rate of bleeding on probing and the degree of risk recurrence between the RC and EC was compared. Results During SPT the RC group showed better curative effect;0tooth was lost in and2teeth in EC; Probing depth decreased1.11mm on average in RC and0.80mm in EC; The rate of bleeding on probing decreased42.72%on average in RC and34.10%in EC;21.7%of patients with high risk of recurrence became to be moderate risk of recurrence in RC and13.5%in EC, that is, probing depth and the rate of bleeding on probing in RC exhibited significant improvement compared with EC(p<0.05).Conclusion PRA model may be useful in adjusting recall intervals. Regular compliance can improve periodontitis prognosis.
