Air-Core pulsed Alternator is a special synchronous generators which is made of akind of nonferromagnetic materials.It uses magnetic flux compensation principles and thestructure of the “Air-Core” to increase the output current of the generator. It has manyadvantages such as high energy storage density and high power output.It is becoming avery desirable miniaturization of the pulse power supply. As the use of non-ferromagneticmaterials, Air-Core pulsed Alternator excitation mode has a big difference with theconventional Iron-Core alternators’. This paper carried out a detailed research on theexcitation and control system of Air-Core Plused Alternator,and the main contents arelisted as follows:First of all, this paper made a deep analysis of operating principle of Air-Core PulsedAlternator,built its mathematical model and simulation platform of the excitation systemby using SABER simulation software.All this work had laid a good foundation for thetheoretical analysis and simulation research after.Then, according to the Air-Core Pulsed Alternator for the subject,we have put forwardthree excitation solutions, the single-pulse excitation solution, the repeated-pulsesexcitation solution and the self-excitation solution. The advantages and the disadvantagesof each excitation plan has been analyzed and compared with others in many aspects ofreliability, feasibility,performance, volume and weight.Furthermore, the starting conditions for the alternator in the self-excitation solutionhas been analyzed in this paper. The previous papers always neglected the voltage drop ofcommutation when they analyzed the starting conditions of the self-excitation, so they didnot get a satisfactory result. This paper got a better result for the starting conditions inself-excitation solution by considering the generator commutation voltage drop.Finally, in this paper the excitation and control system of Air-Core Pulsed Alternatorhas been designed and the alternator has been manufactured. Experiment research based onthe single-pulse excitation solution mode also has taken place. The results verified thecorrectness of alternator simulation model. We also got some investigated rules of itsoutput waveform, which were influenced by the main discharging swich and the ignitionangle.
