We are exposed to all kinds of stress, such as financial state, students facing exams, unemployment. Many literatures have proved the associate between stress and Major Depression. As a result, detecting the stress symptoms before these imperceptible changes grow into metal disorder is crucial in prediction and intervention of major depression disorder. In psychology field, psychology instruments are adopted to measure man’s emotion and psychology state. However, one distinguish problem of psychology instruments is its objectivity. By contract, EEG is subject and precise. In this study, we focus, by means of EEG and psychology instruments, on one specific group: mothers with mental retardation children. This paper proposed a new method, combining EEG and psychology instruments under the concept of data mining, to detect stress which can contribute in prediction and intervention of major depression. Seven mothers with mental retardation children as stress group and four age-matched mothers with healthy children as normal controls are enlisted. Results showed that relative power in alpha rhythm of stress group is significantly less than normal controls, while relative power in theta rhythm is much larger than normal controls. Discrimination accuracy gets higher than only using psychology instruments for distinguishing the two groups in our experiment. Besides, combination of EEG linear and nonlinear features is better than using only linear ones. Combination of LZ-complexity, alpha relative power and PSQI achieves discrimination accuracy of95.12%, which gains an improvement of19.51%compared with accuracy by using only PSQI. As a result, the combination of EEG and psychology instruments will benefit the detection of stress. Afterwards, in the supplementary experiment of research of BDⅠ-Ⅱ and EEG. we include25mothers with mental retardation children, trying to match EEG features and corresponding BDI-Ⅱ result. Even though the classification accuracy rate is very stable, supplementary experiment does prove that EEG can be used in detecting depression symptoms. All in all, EEG can benefit the detecting of mental stress.
