The advantage of evolvable hardware (EHW) is that it can change its own internal structureaccording to the changes of the environment to adapt to the new environment. It takes evolutionaryalgorithm (EA) as the main global search tool, and takes the reconfigurable device as the evaluationmethod and the carrier of realization. The purpose of EHW is to obtain demanded circuit and systemstructure using EA without any priori knowledge and manual intervention, then change its architectureand behavior dynamically and autonomously in order to adapt to the internal conditions (such aspartial failure) and the changes in the external environment. By implementing EA and thereconfigurable circuit on the same FPGA, self-evolving hardware based on SOPC can be constituted,which provides an possible approach to put EHW into the engineering application and to constitutethe adaptive and fault tolerant hardware system.In this thesis, the design of the self-evolving system based on SOPC, and the verification of it onXilinx Virtex-Ⅱ Pro development board are reported. Main research aspects are as follows:(1) Overview the concepts of evolvable hardware, SOPC, evolutionary algorithm and relatedresearches and progresses at home and abroad; analyse the basic principles and key technology ofevolvable hardware and give the basic operation flow of genetic algorithm; introduce the experimentalplatform and development environment of self-evolving system, which include the basic structure ofFPGA and embedded development tool.(2) Give the whole design scheme of self-evolving system, which takes Virtex-Ⅱ Pro FPGAdevelopment board as the hardware platform, on which design the virtual reconfigurable circuit, theevolution module and add the evolvable IP core to the whole hardware system.(3) Put forward the software design scheme of self-evolving system. Take an adder circuit andtwo-bit multiplier circuit as examples to verify this self-solving system.Finally, summarize the whole thesis and put forward the suggestions for the next research.
