Objective To study the current state of critical thinking and its influencing factors among nurses from Intensive Care Unit of grade A class3hospitals in Changsha, so as to provide recommendations for raising the critical thinking ability of ICU nurses and to offer reference frames for improving the nursing staff continuing education and the training of students in school. Methods Cluster sampling was used to select324nurses from Intensive Care Unit of7grade A class3hospitals in Changsha. The current state of critical thinking among the nurses was measured by Chinese Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CTDI-CV). The data was imported by Epidata software (version3.1) and processed by SPSS software package (version16.0). The statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and multiple variable logistic regression.Results1. A total of332questionnaires were issued,324questionnaires recycled effectively. They are from Xiangya Hospital (76), The Second Xiangya hospital (39), The Third Xiangya hospital (54), Hunan Provincial People’s Hospital (36), the Cancer Hospital of Hunan provincial (17), Hunan Children’s Hospitals(52) and Changsha Central Hospital (50), respectively. The forms of sample are as follows:women305(94.1%) and men19(5.9%); age between20and49, with an average of25.72±4.33;214singles, consisting of66.0%, the years worked in Intensive Care Unit between0and26, with an average of3.08±3.62, First education of nurses from secondary school, College to Bachelor accounting67(20.7%),202(62.3%),55(17.0%) respectively; Supreme education of nurses from tertiary, undergraduate to masters127(39.2%),191(59.0%),6(1.9%).2. The average CTDI-CV score of324nurses from Intensive Care Unit is284.22, indicating nurses have positive disposition toward critical thinking; among the seven subscales, scores of five ones were all higher than40points, except truth-seeking and maturity(lower than40points). The order ranking at descending order of scores was inquisitiveness, analyticity, open-mindedness, CT self-confidence and Systematicity.3. The influence factors include the title of profession, first education, highest level of education, work years in Intensive Care Unit, work years relating to nursing, nursing work attitude, the frequency of activity and the frequency of learning.4. The results of multiple logistic regression analyses show that the nurses who worked in intensive care unit beyond five years are more likely to possess a positive critical thinking than ones worked short of five years (OR=5.94,95%CI:2.35,15.03); who are Nurse Practitioners more than ones are Nurse (OR=3.89,95%CI:2.14,7.09); who are Nurse-in-charge (or co-chief superintendent nurse) more than ones are Nurse (OR=3.90, OR95%CI:1.62,9.42); whose first education is junior college more than those with special secondary school (OR=3.25,95%CI:1.36,8.16); whose first education is undergraduate college than those with special secondary school (OR=3.37,95%CI:1.66,6.80); the nurses who frequently participant activities or often study are more likely to possess a positive critical thinking than the nurses who never/rarely or sometimes participant activities and study,(OR=1.68,95%CI:1.16,2.44) or (OR=1.58,95%CI:1.08,2.30).Conclusion1. Nurses of ICU have a generally positive critical thinking, but they do not have a solid strength in the disposition toward critical thinking. Nurses demonstrate strength in inquisitiveness and analyticity, but deficiencies in truth-seeking and maturity.2. The factors which influence critical thinking disposition of nurse from Intensive Care Unit are as follows:work years in Intensive Care Unit, the title, first education, activity and study. The nurses who worked in ICU more than five years, who is Nurse Practitioner or Nurse-in-charge or co-chief superintendent Nurse, whose first education is junior college or undergraduate college, who frequently participant activities, who often study, are more likely to possess a positive critical thinking.
