Objective: To explore the dirtribution and growth of research articles oncataract, providing bibliometric information for cataract researchers. Bydiscussing the distributions and trends of the cataract, the study of cataract hasbeen turned from the basis for research problems relation with cataract. Methods: Research articles on cataract published in Pubmed from1813to2011were analyzied by bibliometric method. Distribution of No. of articles bytime, characteristics of journals, language, type of article, vice mesh, characteristics of subjects, full articles and accessibility were statisticallyanalyzed. The bibliometric method is used to analysis the literature on cataractin PubMed database during1813-2011, and do the bibliometrics analysis whichof the statistical analysis of the literature trends, journals, language, type, vicemesh, studying characteristics, Access full text and statistical analysis. Bymeans of manual coding, documents were classified according to documents ofstudy and to Statistical analysis. Results: During1813-2011, there were47602cataract research literaturesin the PubMed database. According to PubMed database literature type, they were categorized as follow: Review(n=3106), Randomized ControlledTrial(n=1986), Practice Guideline(n=23), Meta-Analysis(n=71),Letter(n=2262),Editorial(n=536),Clinical Trial(n=3407),Others(n=36571);MEDLINE(n=45535) and Others(n=2067);Nursing journals(n=463),Coreclinical journals(n=4172), Others(n=42967); Man(n=19400),Woman(n=18693),Others(n=9509);Humans(n=38011),Animals(n=6191),Others(n=3400); Infant(n=3244), Child(n=8209), Adult(n=10877),Aged(n=19411),80and over(n=6336);Links to full text(n=25725),Links tofree full text(n=6950),Abstracts(n=30877). From1946to2011, the number ofliteratures by year approximated straight line (y=598.71x-689.92, R2=0.9746).Chinese cataract literatures in PubMed appeared in1946, and increasedobviously since1961. The cataract literatures is primarily in English (36120,75.9%), Chinese publication literatures arranged at7th (762,1.6%).3825literatures were retrieved in21journals on ophthalmology (SCI-indexed).Conclusion: Our results showed that cataract research was conducted atearly time, but it is not a hot topic until1960s of last century. Cataract researchis still a focus by now, which is evidenced by the linear growth of the number ofarticles. As a side of Research, cataract started earlier, but became ahot research from the beginning of the1960s of last century. The literature isa nearly straight line growth in the amount of evidence; cataract is still a hottopic of concern.
