The Study Of Urban Niche In Arid Region

City is the artificial compound ecosystem including three subsystems, i.e. nature,society and economy. While urbanization gives rise to the material comforts forpeople, it also brings a series of problems such as environmental pollution, ecologicaldamage and lack of resources, which have caused tremendous pressure on urbanecosystem. Therefore, How to regulate the urban ecosystem and establish liveableurban environment have become an important issue of sustainable urbandevelopment.Wuwei City is located in the Hexi Corridor, the eastern end of the Shiyang RiverBasin midstream and in the convergence zone of the two deserts Tengger and theBadan Jilin. In this area, drought and water shortage, desertification, reduction offorest area, poor natural condition, ecological environment deterioration is seriously.Land desertification is a major ecological and environmental problem therein. Thisthesis summarize and draw on the results of previous studies based on the NicheTheory, With the niche theory to study the variation of urban natural niche, economicniche and community niche, and analyze the driving force which lead to the changes.Proposals for controlling niche of each functional module are advanced, whichprovide reference about economic development, ecological construction andenvironmental protection for Wuwei City and other similar cities in arid areas.The conclusions in the thesis are as follows:Firstly, from2001to2010, there are downward trend in atmosphericenvironment module and the water environment module, while upward trend in urbangreening module, which mean significant improvement of natural environment duringthis period.Secondly, from2001to2010, there are little change in industrial module, upwardtrend in the second industrial module, and downward trend in the tertiary industrymodule, which indicate Industrial pattern of the economic system gradually becomereasonable, but the development of tertiary industry is slow.Thirdly, from2001to2010, there are upward trend in social infrastructuremodule, downward trend in water resource allocation module, and little change in the modules of population and the social production, which imply social system is on therise at a low rate.Finally, to regulate the urban niche of Wuwei City more efficiently,Government should take measures in adjustment of industrial structure, populationcontrol, ecological construction and environmental protection, development of socialundertakings, and construction of urban infrastructure.
