"Newspapers for the Masses at Border Area" (origin of "Shaanxi Daily") was founded in March 25^th, 1940. As a Party Organ catering for the ordinary people and cadres at grass-roots level in Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia Regions, it had been committed to explore a popular and common way of running a newspaper, and regarded as the initiator and practitioner of Newspaper Popularization Movement in Yan'an periods (1930s----1940s). So analyzing this newspaper from cultural perspective echoes with CPC culture policy, meets the requirements of cultural development in our times and of building harmonious socialism culture. The theoretical foundation of this research is the cultural property and cultural function of media.This study intends to make a comprehensive analysis of "Newspapers for the Masses at Border Area" from cultural perspective, with attempts to summarize the experiences in running a newspaper and propose some constructive suggestions for Chinese media on how to build harmonious socialism culture. The thesis consists of following parts:Part I: Introduction. It includes backgrounds and significance of this study, present related researches and a concise introduction of research method and theoretical foundation).Part II: Brief introduction of "Newspapers for the Masses at Border Area".Part III: Cultural interpretation of "Newspapers for the Masses at Border Area". Cultural features and significance of the newspaper will be analyzed from the four aspects—establishment of guideline, linguistic features, contents and cultural identities.Part IV: Practical significance of "Newspapers for the Masses at Border Area".Part V: Implementation of harmonious culture and functions of media. It mainly elaborates on how Chinese media exerts its cultural functions to pass on and develop the essence of Chinese culture in new situation.
